There are many wonderful fall holidays celebrated around the world. Here in South Korea we just finished celebrating Chuseok, most likely you have heard that Chuseok and American Thanksgiving are similar. However, did you know that there is another North American holiday that has even more similarities to Chuseok than Thanksgiving? The holiday is called Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The holiday originated in Mexico but is celebrated by many people across the Americas.

Dia de Los Muertos is a two day holiday that falls on November 1st and 2nd. Some people confuse Dia de Los Muertos with Halloween but the holidays are different. Halloween is for scaring away bad spirits, while Dia de Los Muertos is about celebrating your ancestors. Additionally, Halloween is not an original American holiday. Halloween came from Ireland and England while Dia De Los Muertos originated with the Aztecs in America. The histories of these holidays should not be confused since each originates from different cultures and carries a different purpose.

The reason that Dia De Los Muertos and Halloween are often confused with each other is that people dress up as skeletons for both holidays. However, Dia De Los Muertos skeletons should be happy and not scary. The skeleton outfits are meant to show respect for dead ancestors and loved ones. The Dia De Los Muertos skeleton outfits are usually highly decorative with many colorful designs.

Although Dia De Los Muertos might look like Halloween to some people, the holiday actually has more in common with Chuseok since the Dia De Los Muertos focuses on celebrating lost loved ones. In traditional Mexican culture, the people considered mourning the loss of loved ones to be disrespectful since the dead live on in our memories and stories. Therefore, to honor the dead, the people of Mexico have a big holiday celebration that keeps the memory of their ancestors alive through food, music, and stories.

During Dia De Los Muertos, like with Chuseok, families create an altar to remember their ancestors. The alter for Dia De Los Muertos often includes the following six items: sugar skulls, marigolds, perforated paper, the bread of the dead, salt, and photographs. There may also be traditional foods and candles. Some people have a three-level altar to represent heaven, earth, and the underworld. Other people use only one level to create their altar.

As with families on Chuseok in Korea, Mexican families tend to the graves of ancestors during the Dia De Los Muertos holiday. The Mexican families clean the area around the graves and bring decorations to leave at the grave such as flowers, photographs, and food. While at the grave together, families may share a meal, sing songs, and tell stories to remember their loved ones. It is an important and joyful time to celebrate their family history.

Another similarity between Chuseok and Dia De Los Muertos is that families have a big feast with many special foods. Mexico is a very big country with many different food traditions, therefore the recipes families chose for Dia De Los Muertos change based on each family’s history. However, similar to how Korean families cook foods that use rice, Mexican families cook many traditional dishes that use corn since corn is an important traditional Mexican food staple.

Dia De Los Muertos is a vibrant holiday and an important part of indigenous American culture. I recommend learning about many different authentic American holidays such as Dia De Los Muertos.
