[평택시민신문] 외국인을 위한 서비스나 안내시설이 부족한 평택에서 외국인들의 ‘평택생활 도우미’ 역할을 톡톡히 해내는 외국인이 있다. 주인공은 평택생활 7년차 미국인 라네 리버스우즈 (Lanae Rivers-Woods)씨.

멕시코 전통요리, 미국식 멕시코요리(텍스멕스), 한국식 멕시코요리(코멕스) 소개

평택에 사는 멕시코 사람들은 멕시코 특유의 풍미를 맛보기가 매우 힘듭니다. 여기에는 몇 가지 이유가 있는데, 우선 한국 사람들 가운데에는 고수나 라임 같은 멕시코 음식 특유의 대중적이고 맛깔스런 향미를 좋아하지 않는 사람들도 많습니다. 여기에다 옥수수 가루 같은 핵심 재료들을 한국에서는 아직 다량으로 조달하기가 쉽지 않습니다.

이것은 마치 한국의 이탈리아 음식과 비슷합니다. 한국의 이탈리아 음식에서는 이탈리아 본토 음식 맛이 전혀 나지 않습니다. 한국식 이탈리아 음식은 내가 지금껏 맛 본 어떤 이탈리아 요리 보다도 달고, 크림과 치즈가 많습니다. 이 같이 한국과 이탈리아의 두 가지 음식 문화가 합쳐져서 원래의 이탈리아 오리지널 맛과는 완전히 다른 새롭고 맛있는 그 무엇이 창조됩니다. 우리는 이것을 코탈리안(Kor-Talian)이라고 부를 수 있을 것입니다.

◼ 과콰몰레(Guacamole) - 텍스멕스 (평택시 팽성읍)

이 곳에서 음식을 먹는 것은 마치 미국에 있는 텍스멕스 레스토랑에서 음식을 먹는 것 같은 느낌이지만, 이곳은 미국 보다 더 풍미가 넘치는 곳입니다. 이곳 멕시코 출신 주방장은 한국에서 오랜 동안 요리를 해 오면서 모든 사람들을 더 행복하게 해 줄 수 있는 노하우를 개발한 사람입니다. 이 분은 멕시코의 전통을 존중하면서도 미국과 한국의 맛을 멋지게 결합해 냈습니다.

◼ 바토스(Vatos) - 코멕스 (평택시 팽성읍)

이번 달에 한국에서 가장 유명하고 핫한 멕시코 음식점이 평택에서 문을 엽니다. 이제 이곳 바토스의 멕시코 음식을 먹으러 일부러 서울에 가서 긴 줄을 서지 않아도 될 것 같습니다. 이 곳은 퓨전음식을 제공하는데 굳이 이를 숨기지 않습니다. 아직 평택에서 오픈하지는 않았지만, 이달 말을 넘기지 않을 것 같습니다.

Finding the Best Mexican in Pyeongtaek

For Mexican residents in Pyeongtaek the flavors from home can be hard to find. There are a few reasons. First, Koreans often don’t like the popular and delicious flavors in Mexican food such as cilantro or lime. In addition to this, many of the key ingredients like corn flour aren’t easily available in Korea yet.

However, the main reason it is hard to find authentic Mexican food in Pyeongtaek isn’t because of the Korean taste preferences or lack of ingredients. It is actually because of the many Pyeongtaek residents from the United States. You might not know this but there is a type of food called Tex-Mex in the United States. It refers to a type of fusion cuisine that combines the flavors of the US with the flavors of Mexico. It is very delicious and extremely popular in the United States. So popular that many people don’t know that it isn’t actually Mexican food.

This is very similar to Italian food in South Korea. Italian food here doesn’t taste at all like Italian food in Italy. Korean Italian food is sweeter, creamer, and cheesier than anything I have ever had before. The two food cultures have come together to create something new and delicious, but not at all the same as the original. You might call it Kor-Talian.

What is cool about Mexican food Pyeongtaek is that you can actually go and try three different types of Mexican food and see how they compare. We recommend that you go on a food adventure and try all three.

◼ Que Rico 께리꼬 - Authentic Mexican 

The first place to start on your food adventure. It was voted the Best Mexican Food in Pyeongtaek by International Residents. It is also our favorite. The Mexican chef is dedicated to providing the pure Mexican food that makes you feel you have traveled across the world in one bite. We recommend trying the Tortas which is a tasty sandwich. Specifically, you should order the Cubana.

◼ Guacamole 과콰몰레 - Tex-Mex 

Eating here is like going to your local Tex-Mex restaurant in the United States, but with a bit more flavor. The Mexican chef has been cooking in Korea for a very long time and has found a way to make everyone happy. He honors his own traditions while bringing in the tastes of the United States and Korea.

◼ Vatos 바토스 - Kor-Mex

This month, one of the most famous Mexican inspired restaurants in Korea is opening a restaurant in Pyeongtaek. You will no longer need to travel to Seoul and wait in long lines to try their take on Mexican food. They love cooking fusion food and don’t try to hide it. They have not opened yet, but they will be by the end of the month.
