[평택시민신문] 외국인을 위한 서비스나 안내시설이 부족한 평택에서 외국인들의 ‘평택생활 도우미’ 역할을 톡톡히 해내는 외국인이 있다. 주인공은 평택생활 8년차 미국인 라네 리버스우즈 (Lanae Rivers-Woods)씨.

사회적 거리두기가 지속됨에 따라 모두가 삶을 더 재미있게 만들기 위해서는  새롭고 다양한 테이크아웃 음식을 선택할 수 있어야 합니다. 다행스럽게도 평택은 세계 각국의 다양한 음식을 제공하는 식당들이 많습니다. 지금 우리 모두는 테이크아웃 음식을 필요로 하고 게다가 서양 음식은 이동성이 좋기에 서양식당을 경험할 좋은 시기입니다. 예를 들자면, 햄버거는 실제로 이동 중에도 먹는 사람들을 위해 만든 것입니다.

현대의 햄버거는 1900년 대에 미국에서 개발된 것으로 생각됩니다. 햄버거의 테이크아웃 버전은 1904년 세인트루이스 세계박람회에서부터 널리 알려졌습니다. 박람회 기간동안 길거리 음식 카트에서는 빵 두조각 사이에 잘게 썰어 만든 쇠고기 패티를 넣어서 판매하기 시작했고 뉴욕 신문에서는 그것에 큰 호감을 가지고 소개하는 글을 썼습니다.

그러나 빠른 햄버거는 최고의 햄버거가 아닙니다. 최고의 햄버거는 맛있는 재료를 사용하고 더 느리게 만들어집니다. 특별한 재료에는 상급의 쇠고기, 독특한 소스, 수제 만두, 계란 튀김, 다양한 종류의 치즈 또는 미국 베이컨의 큰 조각이 포함될 수 있습니다. 이러한 많은 맛있는 것들이 한번에 투입되어 나오는, 사람들이 소위 "맛 폭탄"이라고 부르는 그런 압도적인 맛을 내기 위해 결합됩니다.

With increased social distancing restrictions, everyone needs new options for take-out food to make life more fun. Thankfully, Pyeongtaek is filled with a variety of restaurant options with food from around the world. Additionally, since we all need take-out food, this is a great time to try Western restaurants since many western foods travel well. For example, hamburgers were actually designed for people eating on the go.

The modern hamburger is thought to have developed in the United States in the 1900s. The take-out version of hamburgers became famous during the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. During the fair, street-food carts began selling ground-beef patties between two slices of bread and a New York newspaper loved it and wrote about it.

In 1921, White Castle became the first hamburger take-out chain and they remain a popular hamburger restaurant chain in the United States today. The White Castle restaurant chain specializes in selling small hamburgers that are specially prepared to cook faster. The White Castle hamburgers became popular because they were affordable, easy to take-out, and cooked fast. The small burgers became known as sliders.

In 1940, McDonald's turned hamburgers into the fast food that we know and love today by developing the Speedee Service System. The system was so good that other fast-food companies around the world started using it. These days, McDonald’s restaurants remain a global leader in the fast-food hamburger industry around the globe. McDonald’s has over 36,000 restaurants that sell 75 hamburgers a second every second of the day.

In Pyeongtaek, more and more fast-food burger shops are opening around town. In Godeok-myeon, Burger King is even opening a drive-thru restaurant. When it opens, Pyeongtaek will have a total of three drive-thrus for ordering fast food burgers since there are already two drive-thru McDonald's.

However, fast hamburgers aren’t the best hamburgers. The best hamburgers are made more slowly with a selection of delicious ingredients. Special ingredients might include high-quality beef, unique sauces, homemade buns, fried egg, different types of cheeses, or big slices of American bacon. Such ingredients combine to create what some people might call a “flavor bomb” which is the sensation of being overwhelmed by many delicious things at once.

In Pyeongtaek, we have a wide variety of restaurants that offer many types of unique burgers. If you go to each restaurant, you will find that they all hamburgers differently. Most of these restaurants are located in Sinjang-dong or Anjeong-ri near the US military bases. I highly recommend order take-out from them the next time you have the chance.

Even though these burgers aren’t super fast, they are super delicious and perfect for take-out. If you are looking for something different to eat, go try some of these hamburgers as take-out. It will be like traveling without leaving Pyeongtaek.
