[평택시민신문] 외국인을 위한 서비스나 안내시설이 부족한 평택에서 외국인들의 ‘평택생활 도우미’ 역할을 톡톡히 해내는 외국인이 있다. 주인공은 평택생활 8년차 미국인 라네 리버스우즈 (Lanae Rivers-Woods)씨. 

SNS 평택 민간홍보대사라는 애칭으로도 불리는 그녀는 현재 블로그 blog.southof seoul.net/ 및 인스타그램 www.instagram. com/south_of_seoul/ 등을 인기리에 운영하고 있으며 플레이스토어/앱스토어에서 내려 받을 수 있는 ‘South of Seoul' 앱도 개발해 많은 정보를 제공하고 있다. 참고로 이 칼럼은 이태원 코로나19 집단감염 이전에 작성됐다.

때때로, 다른 나라에 사는 사람들에게 다른 나라에 살고 있어서 가장 힘든 일들 중 하나는 자기 나라에서 일어나는 정치, 사회적 변화를 전적으로 지지할 수 없다는 사실일 것입니다. 설사 한국에서의 우리 삶이 매우 잘 진행되고 있다고 할지라도 언젠가 돌아갈 자기 나라에서 편안함을 느끼기 위해서는 필요한 변화들이 존재합니다.

예를 들어, 우리가 열정적으로 지지하는 인권 문제가 있을지라도 다른 나라에서 살기에 투표를 하거나 평화적인 항의를 하는 것을 어렵게 합니다.

또한 우리의 한국 동료, 친구 또는 가족이 우리나라의 정치적 또는 사회적 문제를 이해하지 못할 수도 있기 때문에 우리나라의 시민들에 의한 소요사태를 이야기하기가 쉽지 않습니다. 스트레스는 물론이고 공포마저 느끼게 하는 고국에서의 정치적 상황들에 대해 말할 수 없다는 것은 여러 면에서 우리에게 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 다른 나라에 사는 우리는 집중을 잘할 수 없거나 피로감, 고립감 그리고 외로움을 더 느낄 수 있는 것입니다.

고국을 함께 걱정하고 사랑과 
지지를 보내는 따뜻한 마음의 표현

Supporting Home from Across the World

Sometimes, for international residents, one of the hardest parts about living abroad is the fact we can’t fully support political and social change in our own countries. Maybe our lives in Korea are going very well, but there are changes in our home countries that need to happen for us to feel comfortable returning someday. For example, maybe there are human rights issues that we feel passionately about supporting but living in a different country prevents us from voting or attending peaceful protests.

Additionally, it can be difficult to talk about civil unrest in our home countries because our Korean co-workers, friends, or family may not understand the political or social issues. This inability to talk about the stressful or scary political situations happening back home can affect us in many ways. It can make it hard for international residents to focus. We also may feel more tired, isolated or lonely than usual.

Right now, many US residents in South Korea are feeling this struggle. The US is experiencing large protests which are focused on the fact that Black Lives Matter. The topic is very important and many people have strong feelings that they need to express so that they are less stressed. That means that US residents in South Korea might be wearing clothes or masks that say “I can’t breathe”, “Black lives matter”, or “No Justice, No Peace”. These are all talking about the Black Lives Matter movement. A business in Sinjang-dong, Pyeongtaek called Songtan Mugs made these shirts and masks for people to show their support.

The t-shirts supporting Black Lives Matter help US residents in Pyeongtaek and South Korea show friends and family in the United States that the US resident living in South Korea still cares about home. The clothes and masks also help US residents feel less lonely and isolated when they see other people wearing the shirts. It creates a warm feeling of love and support that helps US residents feel connected to home. If you see one of the shirts you don’t need to feel afraid.
