[평택시민신문] 평택이 점점 반려동물 친화도시가 되고 있음을 환영합니다. 이러한 진전은 개를 사랑하는 외국인 거주자들에게는 아주 반가운 소식입니다. 멋진 애완동물용품점과 도그카페, 애완견들과 편안하게 나들이할 수 있는 공원들이 항상 새롭게 생겨나는 것 같습니다. 이처럼 애완동물 지원서비스와 지역사회의 애완동물 수용성이 급속하게 커지는 것은 우리와 같은 외국인 거주자들이 평택을 좀 더 편안하게 느끼는데 도움을 줍니다. 외국인 거주자들이 애완견을 데리고 방문하고 싶어하는 곳 가운데 하나는 팽성에 있는 애견 공원입니다. 이곳에서 외국인 거주자들은 다른 개 소유주들과 자유롭게 교류하며 새로운 친구를 사귀기도 합니다.

그러나 비록 이러한 진전된 상황들이 있지만, 아직도 외국인 거주자들이 불편해하는 상황들은 많습니다. 외국인 거주자들은 애완견을 데리고 평택 지역사회와 교류하는 것에 대해 흥미가 많지만, 언어장벽과 문화적 차이로 인해 더 가깝게 교류하는데 여전히 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 몇 번의 스트레스가 쌓이는 경험을 하고나면, 외국인 거주자들은 애완견을 데리고 밖에 나가기보다는 차라리 집에 머무르는 것이 더 편하다는 생각을 갖게 됩니다.

공공장소에서 그들을 도와주고 그들이 더 편하게 느끼게 할 수 있는 방법은 무엇일까요? 이 상황을 개선하는 방법을 이해하기 위해서는 무엇보다 이들의 고통을 이해하고 당신 스스로 이 상황에 대해 상상해 보는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

당신이 모든 사람들과 동물들이 다른 언어로 말하는 애견 공원에 당신의 개를 데리고 갔다고 잠시 가정해 봅시다. 어떤 장애물에 직면할까요? 지켜야 할 규칙을 어떻게 배워야 하나요? 만일 다른 개가 당신의 개를 괴롭힌다면 어떻게 그만두라고 말해야 할까요? 당신의 개가 낮선 사람들을 싫어한다면 다른 사람들에게 당신의 개를 만지지 말라고 어떻게 말해야 할까요? 당신의 개가 음식 알레르기가 있다면 어떻게 해야 다른 사람들이 사료를 주지 못하도록 할 수 있을까요? 당신이 보다시피 생각하고 걱정해야 할 것들이 많습니다.

그러나 나쁜 소식들만 있는 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 함께 노력한다면 많은 스트레스 나는 상황들을 극복하고 외국인 거주자들이 더 편하게 느낄 수 있도록 도울 수 있습니다. 예를 들면, 당신이 도그 카페를 운영하고 더 많은 외국인 거주자들이 고객이 되기를 원한다면, 가게 앞 유리에 가격과 사용규칙에 대해 명확하게 써 붙여 주세요. 영어 안내문은 외국인 거주자들이 거부감 없이 안으로 들어가도록 도와줄 수 있습니다. 외국인 손님들에게는 천천히 규칙에 적응할 수 있도록 충분한 시간을 주는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 절대로 그들을 다그쳐서는 안 됩니다.

다음으로, 아마 이상하게 생각할지 모르겠지만, 개도 문화적 차이에서 오는 문화쇼크를 경험한다는 점을 알아야 합니다. 이것은 여러분이 개를 동반한 외국인 거주자들을 만날　때, 사전에 물어보지 않고서는 만지거나 먹이를 주어서는 절대로 안 되는 이유이기도 합니다. 이 충고를 따라야 한다는 것이 이번 글의 가장 중요한 포인트입니다. 개가 아무리 사랑스럽고 친근하게 느껴져도, 주인에게 “당신의 개를 만져도 될까요?”라든가 “당신의 개에게 먹이를 줘도 될까요?”라고 항상 물어보아야 합니다. 이렇게 하지 않는다면, 그 외국인 거주자는 기분이 상해 화를 낼 것입니다.

It feels like there is always a cool new pet shop, dog cafe, or park popping up where we can hang out with our pups. This rapid growth in pet support services and community pet acceptance has helped international residents like us feel more at home in Pyeongtaek. One of the places international residents love to visit with their dogs is the free, public, outdoor dog park in Paengseong. We can gather with other dog owners to socialize and make new friends.    Even though we love these developments, there are still struggles for other international residents. On the one hand, international residents are excited to socialize in the Pyeongtaek community with their dogs. On the other hand, the language barrier and cultural differences make everything harder. After a few stressful experiences, international residents will often decide it is easier to stay home to play with their dogs. What can be done to help support them and make them feel more welcome in public spaces? To understand how to improve the situation it is essential to understand the struggle and imagine yourself in the experience.    Image for a moment if you took your dog to a dog park where all the people and animals spoke a different language. What hurdles might you face? How do you learn about the rules to follow? If another dog is bothering your dog, how do you tell them to stop? How do you tell others not to touch or pick up your dog if your dog doesn't like strangers? If your dog has a food allergy, how do you keep other people from giving them treats? As you can see, there are many things to think about and worry about.    However, it is not all bad news. If we all work together, we can overcome many of the stressful situations and help international residents feel welcome. For example, if you have a dog cafe and would like to have more international residents as customers, post the costs and rules clearly in the front window. The English sign will help the international resident feel comfortable coming inside. It is also important to give global customers time to slowly ready the rules. Don't rush them.    Next, it might be surprising to know the dogs also experience culture shock. That is why, when you meet an international resident with their dog, please do not touch or feed the dog without asking. Following this advice is the most critical point in this article. Even if the dog is adorable and friendly, always ask the owner, "May I touch your dog?" and "May I feed your dog?" If you do not do this, the international resident will be both angry and offended.     If you are given permission touch or feed the dog, please approach slowly and quietly. Dogs of international residents are also learning about Korean culture. Just like you might be stressed hearing a lot of English, the dog is stressed hearing a lot of Korean. If you are kind, quiet, and slow the dogs and their owners will learn to trust Korean culture and love going for walks.    Finally, it is essential to respect international residents when they say, "Do not feed my dog" or "Do not touch my dog." Owners know their pets very well if they tell you not to feed or touch their animal please listen. It is critical for the dogs' safety and your safety that you respect the owners' words. If you do not speak English and can to ask about feeding or touching the international resident's dog, please do not touch or feed the dog at all.
